When things are uncertain and you need to resolve a situation, it is common to make checks, by rolling a d20 against the Difficulty Value (DV), adding modifiers and comparing the two.
There are four degrees of success when rolling a check:
| Result | Description |
|---|---|
| Critical Success | You rolled +10 higher than the DV. You succeed and more! |
| Success | You rolled equal to or higher than the DV. You accomplished what you set out to do. |
| Failure | You rolled less than the DV. You did not accomplish what you wanted, or success comes at a cost. |
| Critical Failure | You rolled -10 or lower than the DV. Not only do you fail, you experience a setback. |
| Additionally, |
- Rolling a 20 increases the degree of success.
- Rolling a 1 decreases the degree of success.
When specific outcomes are listed for all four degrees of success, use only one outcome unless otherwise specified. If outcomes are only given for success or failure, they apply for critical successes and failures too.
Example Figure

If the DV is 15:
- A roll of 5 or lower is a critical failure.
- A roll of 14 or lower is a failure.
- A roll of 15 or higher is a success
- And a 25 or higher is a critical success.
